Dr. Hook got their first break when they were chosen to sing the soundtrack to the 1971 Dustin Hoffman movie "Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?" The songs for the soundtrack were written by the famous children's poet Shel Silverstein, and the project began a lifelong friendship between Shel and the members of Dr. Hook. Shel had written "Sylvia's Mother" and it was to become Dr. Hook's first of a long string of hits written by Shel over the years. When Shel died in 1999, Dr. Hook lead singer, Dennis Locorriere, remade "Sylvia's Mother" A Capella and retitled it "In Rememberance of Shel Silverstein."
The following video is a live performance of "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook's lead singer, Dennis Locorriere.
Lyrics
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's busy"
"Too busy to come to the phone"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's tryin'"
"To start a new life of her own"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's happy"
"So why don't you leave her alone?"
CHORUS
And the operator says "40 cents more for the next 3 minutes"
Ple-ease Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just wanna tell 'er goodbye
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's packin'"
"She's gonna be leavin' today"
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's marryin' "
"A fella down Galveston way"
Sylvia's mother says "Please don't say nothin'"
"To make her start cryin' and stay"
CHORUS
Sylvia's mother says "Sylvia's hurryin' "
"She's catchin' the nine o'clock train"
Sylvia's mother says "Take your umbrella"
"cause Sylvie, it's startin' to rain"
And Sylvia's mother says "thank you for callin'"
"And, sir, won't you call back again?"
CHORUS
Tell her goodbye
FADE
Please
Tell her goodbye

Thanks, 8 Ball. I had no idea that Shel Silverstein wrote "Sylvia's Mother." I just listened to it again after not hearing it in years--what a treat! Keep 'em coming.
