RE: The Bible: Fiction Based on Fiction
So, I take it that there is empirical evidence that the story of Gilgamesh happened then? Proof please.
Can you prove that that story was written before the story of Noah was written by Moses?
Remember,George, you are apply the very reasoning that Christians apply about the bible here.

I don't believe the story of Utnapishtim is true any more than I believe the story of Noah is true. They are both stories. It is actually more logical and believable that both are merely stories and that one was inspired by the other rather than to believe that they are both stories of men told by god to build arks and gather animals and their families to be saved from floods and yet one is pure fiction and the other a true account.
As far as when it was written, Christian bible scholars believe the original to have been written around 3,000 BC.

My point here, 8ball, is that george is using the very same reasoning for his points thaty CVhristians do about the bible. And the discovery of the remains of the Ark on Arrarat is very powerful evidence in favour of Noah.

Is it more logical to believe that one of these stories is truth, while the other is false, or is it more logical to reason that both of these stories are works of fiction by primitive mindsets from an ancient time. Try to work your way out of it Malcolm, but mythology is mythology.

RE: The Bible: Fiction Based on Fiction
It would be foolish of me to argue with any of you why the story of Noah, or even the story of creation are true. There was a time, even as a Christian believer, I thought the OT stories were a foolish thing to believe.
But, after many years of study, and discovering the Bible much more in depth,
I came to the conclusion, these things actually did happen. What/who changed my mind? Jesus Christ.
Both the Old and the New Testament rely on the miracles to authenticate its message, and the messenger. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, the apostle Paul admits that the Christian faith is built on a lie To show its credibility, the New Testament names its witnesses, and did so within a time-frame that enabled those claims to be tested Many of the witnesses ended up as martyrs, not for abstract moral or spiritual convictions, as the 9/11 hijackers but, for their claim that Jesus had risen from the dead. While martyrdom is not unusual, the basis on which these people gave their lives is what's important. Many have died for what they believed to be the truth. But people do not die for what they know to be a lie.
I have no reason to believe all those eyewitnesses died for a lie. Jesus said He was the Son of God. He said He is the Only way to Heaven,. He said all that believe in Him and ask for forgiveness of their sins, will enter into Heaven. His resurrection authenticates both Him and His message.
What than is the proof for Noah or Creation? Jesus Himself. He made it clear that He believed the Old Testament Scriptures were more than a national tradition. He believed the Bible was a book about Himself. To His countrymen He said, "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life".The entire Old Testament is a story His coming one day.
Jesus believed the story of Noah and because He rose from the Dead after 3 days, that to me give Him lots of credibility in what ever He says.
