Yea, I suppose the idea of America having its own language, its own idenity its own set of traditions and values,
that we can all unite around and become one, has become "outdated".

"A house devided can not stand"
Hmmm....Makes sense to me.

Ed, what YOU are saying is divisive. Are you saying that immigrants to this country and those who aren't WASPs couldn't possibly accept America traditions and values? Hmmm...wonder what that was I sat through a couple of weeks ago in which over 2,000 immigrants from over 50 countries were granted their citizenship? They have to study for and pass a test over American history and government that I doubt most people who were actually born here could pass.

You missed the point of my entire post. Other people who don't sound or look exactly like you are already here and AMERICAN businesses are taking advantage of it. GET OVER IT. It is moot. You can be as upset as you want to be but it doesn't do any good.

Again, complaints instead of ACTION.

But then again, I guess it's hard to homeschool your children about diversity and other languages when do you don't know anything about it. I wonder how that contributes to the lagging American education system?

Well, it might to me too if I knew what devided meant.

Ed, your arrogance is embarrassing. Please stay in the United States.

Liberal Debate rule #1…If you can’t supply any points that support your argument, name-calling works.,

Btw, Obama’s statement on this topic, is the epitome of arrogance.

#1 I did support my argument, you just chose not to respond to it. #2 I did not personally attack you. I merely pointed out why you would feel so threatened by diversity and the inevitable necessity of learning other languages for your own sake and for the survival of your children in a world that is changing.

You love to pick and choose to suit your own agenda: scripture, other people's posts.

THAT is not debate.

Another thing...I'm not a liberal. I'm a realist. I'm for the right person for the job and I'm not seeing him/her in this election. However, other people on this board would consider themselves a liberal so I'm sure they would thank you very much for keeping your passive aggressive remarks to yourself. But, according to your logic, I guess you couldn't supply any points. That makes perfect sense since you chose to ignore:

Are you saying that immigrants to this country and those who aren't WASPs couldn't possibly accept America traditions and values?

Spanish is here to stay. So I'll say it again. Stop complaining about it and DO something like teach your children Spanish so they can survive.

Oh, wait. You can't.

But others can and most certainly will. Where will you and your ill-equipped children be?

As a parent, that is certainly something to think about. But I guess good parenting and competent homeschooling would make you a bad American.

Our attitude holds us back. In Europe, they would learn the other language(s). Here, we complain.

I agree. My sister lives overseas, and her daughter speaks 4 languages, fluently. She learned English and Greek from her parents as her native languages. In her school, learning English is compulsary. But since she already could speak/read English having learned from her mother, they allowed her to take private lessons in another language and skip the English lessons. So, she learned German. Now, she is studying Russian as well. She is now about to enter university at Oxford and plans on studying international law.

If the US wants to remain a global power, we need to be able to compete globally. That means advocating learning new languages, even if it is Spanish. I think most people who argue against their children learning Spanish are against it more based on their own prejudices and bigotry than anything else. But I digress. We also need to push science and math instead of religion in our schools. I think the US is in for a big wake up call.

"A house devided can not stand"

Aside from the bad spelling, I agree with this phrase. But having the same language, same religion, same opinions does not make a country united, and embracing the cultures and languages and our immigrant friends have to offer does not make a country divided. The US does have it's own identity. Read the inscription on the Statue of Liberty sometime.

Quote:
The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

THAT is our identity. It doesn't say "Give me your English speaking, Christian, Conservatives that think just like edtwo". Although, they would be welcome, just like any other immigrant. However, the US has always been about a mix of cultures all striving for the same thing, freedom and democracy, while still keeping their own cultural identity. Nobody minds it when our Irish-American friends celebrate on St Patricks day, or our German-American friends celebrate Oktoberfest. Heck, we even join in and help them celebrate. But we sure do get our panties in a ruffle when our Mexican-American friends celebrate Cinco de Mayo, don't we? Why is that?

The thing that makes our country divided is the growing force of "us vs. them" that gets fed by people like you, edtwo. The fact that we can't work together and accept our fellow countrymen's differences is what makes us divided.

RE: Obama…Just Another American who’s ashamed of being American.

"We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an

American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people."

Teddy Roosevelt
