So, if a job requires you to have a bachelor's degree for their field, is that discrimination? Come on. An employer sets their requirements on skills that will be needed. Being multi-lingual is a skill and a benefit.
Also, what if the person who was helping you is in the process of learning English? I'm sorry you're sick to death of people who can't speak English. You seem like the kind of person who gets frustrated at anything that isn't exactly tuned to your chosen lifestyle.

Don't start using insults to sidestep the topic. The fact is, this is America. Our language is our language. I have no problem with people learning other languages. I wish I knew more. But we should not be required to learn a language and especially one particular language. People who come here should learn our language. If they are learning, I do not have a problem with that. They are doing what is right and making an effort. But I should not be made to accommodate them. And it should not be a job requirement.

This is your problem. You don't want to accommodate any other lifestyle than the one that lines up exactly with your opinions. This isn't an insult, this is what you show to us.
Also, I don't think that you really wish you knew more, because you'd try to learn Spanish. Then this whole thing wouldn't be that big of a deal.

It IS frustrating to go American stores in America and to not be able to understand the clerks because they can barely speak English. There is no excuse for that. I once asked for help in Food Town and the employee I found couldn't speak English. So he waved down another employee who walked up to help. Turns out he didn't speak English either. So I stood there while the two of them discussed my question in Spanish. Eventually they waved down a third employee and asked him in Spanish. Finally, he answered my question in broken English.
By the way, he still misunderstood what I was asking and sent me to the wrong isle.

In the end it's all about money.....American business will cater to Spanish speaking people as long as they have an American dollar in their pocket. If we had an influx of Chinese people come to America like we see with the Spanish speaking people, you can bet your arm there would be Chinese all over the labels....

I'm sick to death of people who can't speak English, and more so with the businesses that hire them to wait on customers.
Then... go to a different store. With that said, I've never had this problem. I've never walked into a store, much less a major department store, and had a problem with employees not being able to help me.

RE: Obama…Just Another American who’s ashamed of being American.
So let me get this straight...
Some of you are complaining that you cannot get helped because no one speaks English but you have a problem with your children learning Spanish so that they can be better equipped out in the world?
Stop griping that this is America and in America it should be English...blah blah blah because that is a MOOT POINT. There is no going back. It is what it is.
And another thing...American stupidity IS embarrassing. How many of you have traveled around the world? Americans act like entitled jerks very often. Look at educational standards around the world. We aren't #1 people. In fact, a 2005 survey ranked us #18 out of 24. THAT is EMBARRASSING! Our attitude holds us back. In Europe, they would learn the other language(s). Here, we complain.
GO FIGURE!
